⁷ But they had no children, because Elizabeth ·could not have a baby [could not conceive; ^Twas barren], and both of them were very old [Gen. 17:17; 18:11].

⁸ One day Zechariah was serving as a priest before God, because his ·group [order; division] was on duty. ⁹ According to the custom of the ·priests [^Lpriesthood], he was chosen by lot [^Csimilar to dice; used to determine God’s will] to go into the Temple of the Lord and burn incense [1 Chr. 6:49; Heb. 9:6].
